Budget Travel: Travelling is A LOT cheaper than you think!

Travelling myths

Exploring the Sidari region of Corfu, Greece.

Budget Travel: I’ve visited over 25 countries and there’s always one question that will pop up sooner or later; ’How can you afford to travel so much?’. There’s this common misconception among non-travellers that extensive travelling can only be done with a large savings account, trust fund or an extremely well-paid job. The truth is that travelling doesn’t require any of that.

I’m so sick of this stupid myth that travelling can only be done with a lot of money. It doesn’t! Sure, it’s not the cheapest life choice/hobby around. Far away from it, but it doesn’t need to be overly expensive either. The truth is that you too can afford to travel more! Anyone that can afford to save at least a few dollars/pounds a week will eventually be able to set off towards your dream destination.

A small sum can go a really long way when it comes to travelling. It can easily be done on the cheap and trust me, you’ll still have a fantastic time. In fact, you might even have a better experience since you’re pushing yourself out of your comfort zone!

Afford to Travel

Diving & Snorkelling The Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

We’re flying halfway around the world for 710 US$ (980 aud) each in November. We’ve been living in Australia for the last 1.5 years and it’s time to move back to London. It’s going to take about one month to travel back to Europe since we will be stopping off in several places along the way. It took me almost 5 hours to sort everything out, but it’s 7 (!) different flights that have to fit perfectly with each other and preferably not eat up a big chunk of our spending money.

Our travel itinerary?
Brisbane –> Sydney –> Melbourne –> Phuket –> Phi Phi Island –> Krabi –> Bangkok –> Stockholm –> London (only V. I won’t move until the beginning of January)

That’s 7 flights (+2 ferry rides) with a combined flight distance of 19,000km and covering 3 different continents for just 800usd (£550) each. Travelling can be done on the cheap. In fact, it’s even easier to get cheap return flights between Australia and Europe (Sweden) for 830 US$ (£550) if you want a more direct route. Yes, that’s a return flight to Europe to/from Australia. Travelling can be done much cheaper than you think. Sure, we will need to spend a lot more money on accommodation, activities, food etc., but all of those things can be done on the cheap as well.

I never thought that prices like that existed before I started travelling for real, but it does. The only flight that was on a special promotion was the Melbourne to Phuket-flight. You can easily do the same route for a similar price with some research. It’s all about knowing where and when to look, so just spend a few hours researching your option. It will be worth it in the end. There’s plenty of other cheap flights out there as well, so just start researching!

Just stop making excuses, start saving and you’ll soon find yourself on your dream trip! Travelling is a lot cheaper and more accessible than you think. You too can afford to travel more!
