Free activities in Brisbane: The Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt. Coot-Tha

Mount Coot-tha Hi! How was your weekend? We’ve walked to the top of Mt. Coot-Tha, visited the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, caught up on both sleep and the latest Game of Thrones episodes and I even came 6th (personal best) in a poker tournament.

The last week has truly felt like the last days of the summer here, with a warm sun and a crisp air. Everyone was out and about and it felt really refreshing to walk along busy streets that was filled with happy people. I’m a city girl after all.Brisbane botanical gardens Mt. Coot-Tha
The Brisbane Botanic Gardens are a nice little city getaway from the Brisbane city center. I must admit that I have never been really keen of the botanic garden after previously visiting the city version (not very good), but it’s really close to the Mt. Coot-Tha lookout and we had a few hours to kill, so off we went! And oh my, I’m happy that we did! It’s really good and I really enjoyed walking around the different garden sections. There’s also a café, planetarium, picnic areas and various function rooms.

The Brisbane Botanic Gardens are a dream come true for someone that either:
1. Likes plants, gardens, flowers and such.
2. Wants a short city getaway and craves grass instead of asphalt for a few hours.
3. Loves for photography. The different gardens are AMAZING for photographers even if you don’t like photographing plants. There’s so many different backgrounds and props that are impossible to get anywhere near Brisbane.

The Botanical Garden is MASSIVE and is located on the top of Mt. Coot-Tha, which is just a short car/bus ride away from the city center. There’s a large Cactus area (hello hairy cactus), a Japanese garden with a cherry blossom tree, a lagoon, various rainforests and a Bonsai house to just name a few. And all of the sections are really big, so you can easily wander around for hours and still discover new things. Seriously, the place is crowded with fantastic photography opportunities. There’s so many different backgrounds and areas to play around with, that I will need to come back again.

(Is it weird that my favorite bonsai tree, out of maybe 20 trees, was the almost-dead looking one? I liked the simplicity and the more graphic look of it over all of the other luscious green bonsai trees..)

Botanical Garden Brsisbane
It’s currently open 7 days a week from 8am – 5.30pm in summer (September to March) and 8am – 5pm in winter (April to August) and is a wonderful place in Brisbane. It’s free (less money spent=more money spent on travelling) and is a short bus ride from the city center. Just visit it! I will defiantly come back with a fully charged camera batteries and empty memory cards.
