I loved the South Sea Island with its coral reefs, free activities and the fact it’s so tiny that you can stroll around the island in less than 5 minutes. But it was time to move on and our next island was a dream come true, also known as the Kuata Island. Yes, it’s just as amazing as it looks!
Kuata Island is a relatively small island in the Yasawas in Fiji, but it’s much larger than our previous paradise and it consists of a mix of heavy vegetation, interesting rock formations and of course, perfect white beaches.
We stayed at the Barefoot Kuata Resort, which is the only place to stay on the island. We were welcomed to the island by a singing staff and hugs as soon as we arrived. The staff was really friendly and made a point memorize the names of everyone. It was only a handful of guests on the island when we arrived, since it’s currently low-peak. But it was honestly the best time to visit the islands in Fiji. It was a lot less people (hello almost deserted beaches!), cheaper and simply a more enjoyable experience. The weather was still nice and it was warm enough (but not boiling) for a beach day.
Can you see the hut in the right corner? That’s where we slept during our two nights on the island. It can’t get much closer to the beach than that! I was even struggling to fall asleep during the first night, because it felt too surreal to hear the waves crashing into the shore.
The location was amazing (once I got used to the sound of waves), but it’s 10 person dorm rooms. We were both happy to sleep in dorm rooms, because it meant that we could actually afford the trip to Fiji. But the room was a little too crowded considering the small space and the fact that it was only one (!!) bathroom. There’s a few private huts on the islands, but they all looked a little worn out. However, Barefoot Kuata is currently undergoing some massive renovations and will most likely look very different (and nicer) in a year or so. There’s also three small pools, but who cares about that when you have a beach like this?!
There’s a few walks and activities on Kuata Island once you want a break from the beach. You can walk on top of one of the big rock formations for a (supposedly) really nice view of the nearby area. There’s also diving and snorkelling excursions and a village trip to the nearby island to keep you occupied. You can also rent kayaks and snorkelling equipment. There’s also another beach on the other side of the island if you want some more privacy.
The water is crystal clear and there’s a lot of corals right off the beach. It’s also a protected area, which means that no fishing is allowed so the marine life is currently booming. There’s all sorts of small fish and sea creatures near the shore and we even saw a baby black-tip reef shark! I know that the photos look pretty lifeless, but I really need to buy a pole for the GoPro since all the fish quickly scatters away as soon as I try to get close with the GoPro.
The food is included in the price and Barefoot Kuata is the only resort on the island, so it’s tough luck if you don’t like the food since that’s the only thing you’ll get. I thought it tasted pretty good and they will cater to any special dietary requirements, so there’s no worries if you have any allergies.
The food was different for every meal (other than the breakfast), which was a nice change from the South Sea Island. The breakfast was a buffet with pancakes, fruit, cereals, scrambled eggs and a few other things to choose from. Lunch and dinner was everything from noodles, fried rice and pasta. V. got a little annoyed with the portion sizes since he’s just to eating bigger portions, but I thought the portion sizes were fine. It’s a shame that they don’t offer seconds (we asked) for people that want a bigger portion, since that’s the only food available on the island. There’s a small table with cookies, chocolate, soft drinks and similar things that you can buy, but it’s not the same thing as a warm meal.
There’s fresh water in every tap on the island, so there’s no need to buy your own water.
I loved our two days on Kuata Island. I mean, perfect beaches, plenty of things to do and relaxing. What’s not to like about it?
What would your paradise island look like?
