Eat Street Markets is a marvelous celebration of food and you can find everything from Japanese pizzas, oysters, cruffins and cotton candy in the size of a small umbrella. There’s live music, a few bars and plenty of space to sit with your friends. The market is a must do in Brisbane and it’s open every Friday and Saturday between 4pm-10pm. I prefer going there when it’s dark, because it’s really nice with all the lights and the atmosphere is a little different than during the day.
The Eat Street Market has wonders like these two chocolate fountains, insanely large cotton candy, gelato, fudge in more flavors than you can even imagine (my favorite is the passionfruit fudge) and many other fantastic things. Yes, it’s almost impossible to choose what to get since it’s just so much, but the only solution is to come back several times.
Okay, okay.. I know that you shouldn’t start with the dessert, but it was just too hard to resist. We went with a vegetarian curry and some sort of stuffed flatbread that was all warm and crispy. It might not be the most appetizing photo since: 1. Someone, hrm.. managed to spill. 2. I was more interested in the food than my camera at the time. It was lovely and could easily have had another portion if it wasn’t a million other things that I wanted to try as well.
The night was going really well until we made a critical mistake.. And stopped by the oyster stand. Oysters are something that both of us have wondered what the big fuss was all about. The big signs lured us in and we were soon standing with a plate of raw oysters. V decided to play it safe and pretended to be a gentleman by leaving the biggest oyster for me. Hmm. He swallowed his pretty fast since, well.. His oyster was a lot smaller than mine. Me on the other hand? I was struggling since it was too big to swallow and I had to partly chew it which really brings our the fishy taste. I like fish, but I’m still not sold on the whole oyster thing. It wasn’t that bad that I wanted to spit it out, but it was bad enough that I wanted to eat something afterwards to get rid of the aftertaste.
So that’s exactly what we did! Let me introduce you to our (eh, mostly mine) gigantic “Rekorderlig Strawberry & Lime Cruffin”. A cruffin is basically the baby of a love affair between a croissant and a muffin. It has the doughy center like a muffin, but a crispy outside like a croissant. It was a lot of different flavors to choose from, but the most interesting must have been the bacon and maple syrup cruffin. Anyhow, I’m sure that you can’t even imagine the size of this thing! It was HUGE and then you lift it up and discover a puddle of strawberry jam in the bottom of the cup.

Where: Hamilton Wharf, Brisbane
When: Every Friday & Saturday between 4pm and 10pm.
How: The fastest and easiest way to get there is by car, but you can also take the ferry to Hamilton Wharf. It’s maybe a 10 minute walk from the wharf and all you need do is to follow the crowd. You won’t be the only one going the there.
Price: The entrance fee is $2/person and then it depends on what you want to eat. Most items cost between $5-10. Just remember to bring cash since most stalls won’t take cards. There’s a few ATMs inside, but they will all charge you and it can sometimes be a insanely long queue to the machines.
