I accidentally stumbled over a video of Cirque Du Soleils Alegria show several years ago and it was love at first sight. I had just moved away from my parents house and I think that I saw the DVD three times in a row. I sat there with a cold cup of tea, paused, went back and watched my favorite moments over and over. I was deeply in love.
I have walked past billboards about their Totem show for years, and I finally got to see it! We booked the tickets as a late 5-year anniversary present and it was finally our turn on Saturday! Okay, I might have been slightly more excited than my partner, but I believe that a happy girlfriend equals a happy boyfriend and vice versa.
Totem takes on the human evolution: from the amphibian state with a bunch of lizard-looking trampoline acrobats, to science and the dream to fly. It’s a spectacular show and I’m a complete sucker for these kind of things. The pulsating music, clever visual effects and stunning choreography make my stomach feel all tingly.
The acrobats make everything look so easy, that a part of my brain automatically believes that I too can spin around in the air without a safety harness. I would just need a tiny bit of dedicated training by the right people. It doesn’t take much effort to picture myself flying through the air and bounce between items with the acrobats while the music is pulsating in the background. It’s obviously not that easy, since the show has some of the best acrobats in the world, but they really make it look that easy.
One of the other main reasons for why I really like Cirque Du Soleil is their extremely high standard. Everything is top-notch, down to the smallest of details. The costumes are amazing and custom-made for every performer, the visual effects highlight the performance perfectly and just a show of wonders. Vintage Current wrote a really good Behind the Scenes blog post about it a few weeks ago.
